Why fraction is difficult

Another frustration for students is that fractions appear in so many contexts. We can divide a pizza in fourths. And we can divide SETS of things like bags of jelly beans or baseballs into groups. Also, we need to use fractions of more abstract things like units of measure—like fractions of an inch or a pound.

A 16 inch pizza? Are those halves the same? Or half of a slice? In fact, this challenge forms the foundation of a great deal of the fraction work I do in my class—to really help students grasp how fluid fractions are. You can see lots of examples of this in my complete fraction unit that has been such a game changer for me and literally thousands of teachers who have used it.

Although we may start our fraction instruction with objects—perhaps paper folding or plastic fraction pieces—we too often move very quickly past these real-world models to paper and pencil computation. To many, this is just a circle with lines. The physical act of cutting, folding, and manipulating is so important for many. To make matters more complicated—this is just the beginning! Do we take the time to really make our more advanced fraction concepts such as multiplying and dividing concrete?

These number lines are a part of my fraction number line resource—also part of my 10 resource fraction toolkit. My daughter actually looks forward to her sessions with you all. November 8, Another example is the topic of adding unlike fractions see video. The teacher can show how the pieces in the fractions need to be split further so that they all are the same kind of pieces—and then you can add.

At first say in 4th grade , you don't need to discuss the "least common denominator". You can simply use pictures or manipulatives. Then, the children will add unlike fractions using manipulatives or by drawing pictures.

After a while, some students might discover the rule about the common denominator, or what kind of pieces the fractions will need split into. In any case, they will certainly remember the rule better when they have been able to verify it themselves with numerous visual examples. I'm not saying that the rules are not needed - because they are. You cannot get through algebra without knowing the actual rules for fraction operations. But by using visual models extensively in the beginning stages, the rules will make more sense, and if 10 years later the student has forgotten the rules, he should still able to "do the math" with the pictures in his mind, and not consider fractions as something he just "cannot do".

Fraction addition - common denominators Add the numerators, and use the common denominator 2. Fraction addition - different denominators First find a common denominator by taking the least common multiple of the denominators.

Then convert all the addends to have this common denominator. Then add using the rule number 1. Finding equivalent fractions Multiply both the numerator and denominator by a same number.

Convert a mixed number to a fraction Multiply the whole number part by the denominator and add the numerator to get the numerator. We love Mathnasium. August 11, My son loves the reward system.
