There are some affecting scenes, but they don't add up to much. For a movie about old beginnings, new beginnings, and endings, there isn't a whole lot happening in the middle. By Michael Gallucci. Two men walk with their arms around one another. A man and a woman hold hands.

A man puts his arms around a woman's shoulders. A woman jumps on a man's back and he carries her. A man rests his head on a woman's chest and the woman gently lays him down on a bed. Two men dance. A man's voiceover explains that his father had told him that he was only able to have sex in bathrooms and describes the risk of being arrested due to homosexuality being illegal at the time.

A woman reads aloud a personal ad placed by a man's father that includes vaguely graphic descriptions of his sexual preferences. A man asks his elderly father if he and his mother had sex, his father responds that they "made do" and then says that his mother probably thought he was a bad lover. A man tells his son that he used to stare at the husbands of women while at parties.

We see two men crying as they watch a man lying on a hospital bed. An elderly man is seen in a hospital bed; he has an oxygen mask on his face and we later see a doctor telling him that he has a tumor in his lungs, which has spread to his liver and lymph nodes. A doctor advises a terminally ill man that they can try a course of treatment but not surgery, since his body is already so weakened from illness. Why did you let me go? Oliver : Maybe because I I don't really believe that it's gonna work, and then I make sure that it doesn't work.

Some months later, deep in idleness and distraction, sad in his bones, Oliver attends a costume party dressed as Freud.

He stations himself next to a sofa and acquires a patient named Anna Melanie Laurent. She communicates by writing notes in little spiral notebooks. She can't speak because she has laryngitis. In a curious sense, her notes and the dog's subtitles convey the same kinds of bottom-line observation: "Why," she writes, "did you come to a party when you were so sad?

One of the pleasures of "Beginners" is the warmth and sincerity of the major characters. There is no villain. They begin by wanting to be happier and end by succeeding. The person left out is the dead mother, Georgia. She spent years in a pointless marriage. If Hal and Georgia were sticking it out for the sake of Oliver, that doesn't seem to have turned out well. And once he was an adult and had left home — why did they persist?

Did Hal lack the moral courage to declare himself? He could have been happier years sooner, and she could have had her chance, too. Hal is not quite as nice as he seems.
