Try to find out what type of motor oil was used. Have a prospective purchase vetted by a mechanic who is very familiar with BMWs.
More often than not, those Carfax reports omit more information than they include. BMW has not significantly changed their 6 cyl engine for about 20 years. The bugs are all worked out of that design. It has consistently been voted one of the 10 best engines in the world throughout its history.
Also about that time, they upped the displacement from 2. That engine was developed for the X5 but seems to be an excellent sedan engine as well. I have a '97 automatic with k miles on it, and a '97 manual with k miles on it, and an '04 with 80k miles on it. The '97s have had virtually every part in their cooling systems replaced through the years.
The highest mileage '97 got a clutch at k miles and new rear wheel bearings at k miles. Both the '97s have gotten new struts and shocks, and several rubber parts that degraded over the 14 years and been replaced.
None of them has ever seen a tow truck. The key is, I buy all these parts on-line and I put them on myself. My neighbors look at my driveway full of shiny BMWs and think I spend a fortune on cars. In fact, I spend less per mile driven than they spend on their Mazdas and Toyotas and Fords.
However, you can still buy a BMW in fine condition after , miles. The way we see it, you could still get , or maybe even up to , miles out of it with good maintenance. Yes, you can expect a few trips to the auto repair shop from time to time. But, this is common in all vehicles that pass the k mark! Generally speaking, BMW cars are good for high mileage. They tend to max out at between , miles. So, anything in that range is seen as possibly too high a mileage to warrant buying the car.
I'm Scott, a BMW enthusiast and many time owner of these wonderful machines. I'm here to document my experiences with BMW's over the years and hopefully help people out along the way. One of the most pressing, although perhaps not most important - are BMWs fun to drive?
BMW is famous for having a back catalogue of amazing cars - both performance wise and aesthetically. Originally Posted by SharkBait. Lieutenant Colonel. Originally Posted by MrPig. Well, I'm sure that if you do regular maintenance, the car will outlive your desire for it.
Especially with our N52's, if you take care of them they will take car of you. Since we are on the subject, a buddy of mines had an e39 i with k miles on the clock in high school. He totaled it when the suspension completely gave out on a curve. The engine was still going. Private First Class. I'm at , something tells me it will last much longer than anything else in the car. My M3 which I sold to a friend last year had K miles on it. It ran strong. I pulled the head to refreshen it and low and behold there was absolutely nothing wrong.
Upper end was doing just fine. Pistons had carbon on them and you could still see the scoring marks in the cylinder walls. What is likely to happen is that the crank will either spin a bearing or snap but at what mileage who knows Lieutenant General.
I'm sure at least miles. I know someone who drove across the country, and then came back. All times are GMT The time now is PM. User Name. Mark Forums Read. Page 1 of 3. Thread Tools.
